Bhagavad Gita Chapter 16, Verse 4 Meaning in Hindi & English

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 16, Daivasura Sampad Vibhaga Yoga (The Yoga of the Divine and Demoniac Natures), now shifts its focus from the qualities of the divine nature to those of the demoniac nature (Asuri Sampad). In the previous three verses (16.1–16.3), Lord Krishna described twenty-six divine virtues that purify the heart and lead a seeker toward liberation.

Now, in Verse 4, Krishna begins describing the opposite qualities—those that arise from ignorance, ego, and attachment to worldly desires. These traits distance a person from spiritual wisdom and create suffering for both oneself and others.

The qualities mentioned in this verse are hypocrisy, arrogance, pride, anger, harshness, and ignorance. Krishna explains that these characteristics belong to those who possess a demoniac disposition.

Lord Krishna says:

"Hypocrisy, arrogance, pride, anger, harshness, and ignorance are the qualities of those born with the demoniac nature, O son of Pritha."

Unlike divine qualities that promote peace and liberation, these negative tendencies strengthen the ego, disturb the mind, and bind the soul to repeated suffering.

The central teaching of this verse is:

Hypocrisy, arrogance, anger, harsh speech, and ignorance prevent spiritual growth, while recognizing and overcoming these tendencies leads us toward Divine realization.

Bhagavad Gita 16.4 – The Beginning of Demoniac Qualities

Lord Krishna declares:

"Hypocrisy, arrogance, pride, anger, harshness, and ignorance are the characteristics of the demoniac nature."

This verse teaches that:

Ego is the root of many spiritual obstacles.
Pride separates us from Divine wisdom.
Anger clouds judgment and destroys peace.
Harsh speech harms both the speaker and the listener.
Ignorance keeps the soul bound to suffering.

The essence of this verse is:

When negative qualities dominate our thoughts and actions, they distance us from God. By recognizing and overcoming them, we awaken our true divine nature.

"हे पार्थ! पाखंड, घमंड, अहंकार, क्रोध, कठोर वाणी तथा अज्ञान—ये सब आसुरी स्वभाव वाले मनुष्यों के गुण हैं।"

English Meaning

Lord Krishna said:

"O Partha, hypocrisy, arrogance, pride, anger, harshness, and ignorance are the qualities of those born with the demoniac nature."

Deep Insights & Philosophical Context

1. Dambha (Hypocrisy)

Krishna begins with Dambha, meaning hypocrisy or pretentious spirituality.

A hypocritical person:

Pretends to be virtuous.
Performs good deeds for praise.
Uses religion for personal gain.
Seeks admiration instead of God.

True spirituality is measured by inner transformation, not outward display.

2. Darpa (Arrogance)

Arrogance arises when a person believes they are superior because of wealth, knowledge, power, beauty, or social status.

An arrogant mind:

Rejects advice.
Looks down on others.
Refuses self-improvement.
Becomes disconnected from humility.

Krishna teaches that wisdom and humility always go together.

3. Abhimana (Pride)

While arrogance concerns outward behavior, Abhimana refers to inner ego and excessive self-importance.

The ego creates false identities such as:

"I am greater than others."
"Everything belongs to me."
"I alone deserve success."

Spiritual growth begins when we realize that everything ultimately belongs to the Supreme Lord.

4. Krodha (Anger)

Anger is one of the greatest obstacles to peace.

When uncontrolled, anger:

Destroys relationships.
Clouds judgment.
Leads to harmful speech and actions.
Weakens spiritual awareness.

Krishna repeatedly warns throughout the Bhagavad Gita that anger leads to delusion and ultimately to destruction.

5. Parushyam (Harshness)

Words possess tremendous power.

Harsh speech:

Hurts others.
Creates conflict.
Spreads negativity.
Reflects inner unrest.

Divine speech is truthful, gentle, beneficial, and compassionate.

6. Ajnanam (Ignorance)

The final quality Krishna mentions is ignorance.

Ignorance is not merely lack of education.

It means failing to understand:

The true nature of the soul.
The law of karma.
The presence of God.
The purpose of human life.

Spiritual ignorance is the root cause of all other demoniac qualities.

7. Demoniac Nature Is Developed, Not Permanent

Krishna does not say that people are permanently evil.

These qualities arise when the mind becomes dominated by ego, selfishness, and ignorance.

Likewise, anyone can cultivate divine qualities through:

Self-reflection.
Devotion.
Spiritual knowledge.
Good association.
Consistent practice.

This teaching gives hope to every seeker.
