Complete Step-by-Step Lakshmi-Ganesha Puja Vidhi for Diwali 2026
By Lakshay Sharma | On 11 September, 2026 | Views
Diwali is one of the most auspicious and joyous festivals celebrated across India. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali represents the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. One of the most important traditions of Diwali is Lakshmi-Ganesha Puja, performed to seek the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity and Lord Ganesha for wisdom, success, and the removal of obstacles.
In 2026, Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday, November 8. Families traditionally clean and decorate their homes, light diyas, prepare sweets, and perform Lakshmi-Ganesha Puja in the evening.
If you are planning to perform the Puja at home, this complete step-by-step guide will help you understand the preparation, Puja Samagri, rituals, mantras, and concluding traditions.
Significance of Lakshmi-Ganesha Puja on Diwali
Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped as the divine goddess of wealth, prosperity, fortune, and abundance. Lord Ganesha represents wisdom, knowledge, good beginnings, and the removal of obstacles.
Worshipping both deities together has a deep spiritual meaning. While Goddess Lakshmi is associated with prosperity, Lord Ganesha represents the wisdom required to use prosperity responsibly. Devotees therefore seek both material abundance and intellectual as well as spiritual well-being.
Performing the Puja with devotion and a peaceful mind is considered more important than elaborate arrangements.
Lakshmi-Ganesha Puja Samagri
Before beginning the Puja, arrange all the necessary items so that you do not need to leave the Puja area during the rituals.
Common Puja Samagri includes:
-
Idol or image of Goddess Lakshmi
-
Idol or image of Lord Ganesha
-
A clean red or yellow cloth
-
Wooden chowki or Puja platform
-
Kalash
-
Coconut
-
Mango or other suitable leaves
-
Rice or Akshat
-
Kumkum and turmeric
-
Sandalwood paste
-
Fresh flowers and garlands
-
Durva grass for Lord Ganesha
-
Fruits
-
Sweets or traditional Bhog
-
Incense sticks
-
Camphor
-
Diyas and cotton wicks
-
Ghee or suitable Puja oil
-
Coins
-
Betel leaves and betel nuts, if traditionally used
-
Panchamrit ingredients
-
Sacred water
-
Aarti plate
The exact items can vary according to family customs and regional traditions.
Step 1: Clean the House and Puja Area
The first step is to clean your home thoroughly before Diwali Puja. Traditionally, cleanliness is considered an important part of welcoming Goddess Lakshmi.
Clean the Puja room or designated worship area and decorate it with flowers, rangoli, diyas, and other traditional decorations.
Place a clean cloth on the Puja platform and keep all the required items nearby.
Step 2: Take a Sankalp
Sit comfortably in front of the Puja altar and calm your mind. Take a moment to remember your family deity and seek divine blessings.
Then make a Sankalp, which is a personal declaration of your intention to perform the Puja with devotion and sincerity.
You may mentally pray for the health, happiness, prosperity, peace, and well-being of your family.
Step 3: Place the Kalash
Place the Kalash near the idols. Fill it with clean water and add rice, coins, or other traditional items according to your family practice.
Place leaves around the opening and a coconut on top. Apply kumkum and turmeric to the Kalash.
The Kalash is traditionally regarded as a symbol of abundance, purity, and divine presence.
Step 4: Worship Lord Ganesha First
Begin the main Puja with Lord Ganesha. In Hindu tradition, Ganesha Puja is performed before other important rituals because Lord Ganesha is revered as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles.
Offer flowers, Akshat, sandalwood paste, sweets, and Durva grass.
You may chant:
“Om Gan Ganapataye Namah.”
Repeat the mantra with devotion and offer your prayers for wisdom, success, and the removal of obstacles.
Step 5: Perform Goddess Lakshmi Puja
After Ganesha Puja, turn your attention to Goddess Lakshmi.
Offer flowers, kumkum, turmeric, Akshat, sandalwood paste, fruits, sweets, and other offerings.
Light a diya and incense and pray sincerely for prosperity, peace, happiness, and financial stability.
A commonly recited Lakshmi mantra is:
“Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah.”
Chant the mantra according to your personal tradition and comfort.
Step 6: Offer Bhog
Prepare traditional sweets and fruits as Bhog for Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha.
You can offer homemade sweets, fruits, dry fruits, or other vegetarian festive foods. The offering should be prepared with cleanliness and devotion.
After the Puja, the Bhog can be distributed as Prasad among family members.
Step 7: Worship Coins and Business Items
Diwali Lakshmi Puja is particularly significant for business owners, shopkeepers, and professionals.
Place coins, new account books, business documents, or other important financial items near Goddess Lakshmi and seek blessings for success and stability.
Many business families consider Diwali an auspicious occasion to begin a new financial year or start new business records, depending on their regional traditions.
Step 8: Light Diyas Around the Home
After the main offerings, light diyas throughout the house.
Place diyas near the entrance, windows, balconies, Puja room, and other appropriate areas. Traditionally, the warm glow of lamps represents the removal of darkness and negativity.
Decorative diyas also create a beautiful and welcoming atmosphere during Diwali celebrations.
Step 9: Perform Lakshmi-Ganesha Aarti
The Puja should conclude with Aarti.
Light camphor or a ghee diya on the Aarti plate and perform the Aarti while singing traditional Lakshmi and Ganesha Aarti.
All family members can participate by joining their hands and offering prayers.
After the Aarti, bow before the deities and seek blessings for the entire family.
Step 10: Distribute Prasad
Once the Puja is complete, distribute the Bhog or Prasad among everyone present.
Spend the evening with family members, light diyas, exchange sweets, and celebrate Diwali in a peaceful and positive atmosphere.
